Airfix Tiger Moth 1/72 *FINISHED*

Post by Barry »

What color is G-ACDC really? In most photos, it looks red. The box art shows red, but Airfix calls for Hu 20 Crimson
which is more like :

https://www.google.com/search?q=tiger+m ... B640%3B490;

Humbrol's color swatch for Hu 20 looks like

https://www.google.com/search?q=tiger+m ... B640%3B350;

which is not at all like what's in the Hu 20 tin.

I kinda like the darker, maroon-like, color...what do you guys think?

I actually think the humbrol one is a pretty good guess, but what you could do is follow a guide I made on that tiger moth scheme:

4 drops of Humbrol 20

1 drop of black

1 drop of silver

It came the closest match to the photos that I could find.

I agree Barry, something a little darker is how I picture it.

I'm probably going to go for Vallejo Air Fire Red

oops :oops: I made an error (Now corrected) in that first post. I referred to Hu 20 as 'Scarlet'. Actually, Hu 20 is Gloss Crimson and looks like this:

So, on to the cockpit

The only thing I did was cut slots for the seat belts in the bulkheads and add belts made from foil.

Sorry for the blur...this is the area that needs the most filler.

Image

Replacing some detail lost trying to get the bottom flat.
Image

The trailing edges are very thin. This damage happened when the sprue pulled loose in the box. My fix is to glue a strip of 5 thou across the gap and fill it with super glue.

Image

I darkened Hu 19 Bright Red with Hu 20 Crimson to get my color. I could have gone a little darker, but all in all, I'm happy with this. The Polikarpov I-5 is straight Hu 20 for comprison.

Very nice indeed :grin: .I just got this kit and found the old Frog DH.60 on eBay, so I'm going to do a parallel build sometime over the summer.

Very nice paintwork. Makes a refreshing change from the military schemes.

So...looking much closer to Hu 20 Crimson in this old photo Also note the silver prop.

And, apparently, the anti-spin strakes come and go. No need to do surgery on the kit then.

Some very good cockpit detail and a most interesting colour scheme. This should look really good when it is finished.

Great job! Colour looks a good match.

I'm almost done building the same and I agree with you that it's a very nice vice-free kit.
