Airfix 1/72 Spitfire Mk. IIa

Post by Tim Reynaga »

Airfix has always made good Spitfires, and their most recent 1/72 Mk.I/Mk.IIa release is no exception.

This build will be mostly out of the box; here’s the cockpit as provided in the kit – excellent!

Image

The only alterations I made were to replace the kit’s rectangular gunsight with a simple Barr and Stroud GM2 made from plastic discs and to add masking tape seatbelts.

Go Airfix!

A very nice pit.
How did you make or where did you get the buckles on the tape harnesses?

Masking tape squares painted silver with a dot of tan in the middle.

When I think back to the first Airfix Spitfire (released in the late 1950's) which was the second kit that I built, and then look at the cockpit in your kit, I realise jusst how far we have come in the modelling world in the intervening decades. What a lovely kit and model.

I completely agree - the new cockpit is miles ahead of those old empty spaces!

The Airfix kit-provided markings for their Spit Mk.IIa were the machine P8088, “The Borough of Lambeth.”

This was the aircraft so beautifully depicted in the old Profile Publications monograph on the Spitfire I & II from 1965.

After painting a base coat of Model Master R.A.F. Dark Earth enamel, I used that rendering as the pattern to make camouflage masks.

The green parts of the scheme were then shot with Humbrol HB1 Green enamel.

Gotta love that sand and spinach!

The undersides were painted Model Master Sky Type S enamel, and the fuselage band was masked off and painted Duck Egg Blue.

After that, the whole airframe was prepped for decals with a coat of Future acrylic.

I think I see a finger print in the future coat! So the cops will know who done it.
Even so, the Spit looks very sweet.

Decaling began with the underside.

Unlike those not-so-great decals I was used to from my childhood Airfix builds, the decals in their newer releases are fantastic! I especially appreciate the extensive stenciling and clear instructions on where to place each of them.

Really great build.
