LifeLike (Inpact) 1/48 Bristol Boxkite - CBK Civilians *FIN*
This is LifeLife's repop of the original Inpact kit. This will form part of the CBK Civilians display and will go nicely alongside the old Avro Triplane.
The plastic as a pale yellow with a swirly translucent marbled look - all of which makes is ruddy hard to see the surface detail. It appears that the moulds were heavily run during their time in Pyro's hands as there is an abundance of flash, unfortunately some small parts are also short shot and will need to be remade. The stand appears to be missing as well.
Some of the sprues:
I removed the cockpit and propulsion parts and cleaned them up and then put the wings together. I used a ruler taped to the bench to get the front edges aligned. Small gaps around the joins and tabs were filled along with shallow ejector pin marks.
Yep that a 12"/30cm wingspan, about the biggest thing I've been in a long time! There won't be a lot of construction until all the parts are painted as everything bit is on show. I could do with getting some more Tamiya clear orange to varnish the wood my LMS has stopped stocking it as it didn't sell or else continue mix clear read and yellow myself.

I’m looking forward to this one! If you fancy a trip over here to chew the fat, I’m sure either Hobbycraft at Guiseley or Frizinghall Models will have some orange... I just bought a new one myself from one or the other!
Best,
M.

A great choice, James, albeit with a veritable cat's cradle of rigging facing you!

One of these (a replica) is hanging up in a museum in Bristol. I did a photoshoot of it when I built the 1/48 kit about a year ago. If you want the photos, contact me and I can put them in Dropbox for you.

Re: LifeLike (Inpact) 1/48 Bristol Boxkite - CBK Civilians
I remember building this shortly after it was released by Inpact in the late 1960's. Simple to construct and reasonably accurate as far as I remember but.... there is always a but! The rigging was a trial!
Many decades later I scratch built a Maurice Farman Longhorn in 1/72 scale (the Boxkite was essentially a modified copy) and guess what? The rigging was a trial!!
Good luck with it - it is actually a fine model when complete and one which attracts attention.

You do like to challenge yourself don't you, James?
I haven't even summoned up the courage to do a bi-plane with rigging yet (it is on my list of things to master), I think something like this would have me running a mile .
I'll look forward to watching this build.

Re: LifeLike (Inpact) 1/48 Bristol Boxkite - CBK Civilians
It's been a while, mainly as I've very little modelling at all over the summer. I did do a huge amount of boring clean up in this kit and get a coat of white primer onto the flying surfaces. With SMW approaching I knuckled down and masked up the wing ribs, yeah all of them. I've got form as I did this for the Avro Triplane too.
First I start with the spars.
The long strips of tape are used to start masking the ribs. The outer sections are 7mm wide and the inner 8mm. There is some variation especially between different parts.
I did one wing and then reused all the tape to do the next.
That tape was reused for all the control surfaces.
I'm done! REALLY I'M DONE!
I did make a mask from a sheet of thin clear plastic, but trying to get this to lay flat on an uneven surface was impossible. You could try a marker of some sort but you need to use a straight edge which is again tricky on uneven surface and can cause bleeding under the edge and through the overlaying paint. Just as I finished I had a thought that a colouring pencil may work. A pieve of thick tape used as a straight edge? Oh well next time.

"Boring cleanup" wow you got that right, Mr Perrin!
Effort well spent I'd say and it looks like you're well on your way towards a wonderful gem of a boxkite.

I don't know if this helps any but I've found tooth picks or cocktail sticks make good replacement struts if the need arises.
Best of luck and I'm enjoying this one already!

Good progress but a lot of masking! Never mind all the struts and rigging - if they are tackled systematically they should not cause too big a headache. Struts and rigging are not as difficult as some imagine.
