DHC Beaver, Hobbycraft 1/72 scale -Finished-

Post by Barry »

OK, so I'm trying really hard not to buy any new kits, but that doesn't mean that I can't buy new decals for kits I already have. I bought this sheet from a vendor at a local model contest last weekend, and pulled the kit from deep in the stash. Decal is from Hawkeye of Australia ( http://www.hawkeyemodels.com.au/Site.htm; ) and looks very good on paper. Fingers crossed.

This was old when I got it, and I've had it for a while.

Detail is adequate although there are no rivets as Airfix used them all on their Beaver. The only thing I have to add are seats for the passengers. No need to go overboard on the interior as it will be too dark to see much behind the front seats. Note that the flap hinges are given as separate items and not as little solid, molded on triangles.

Image

Optional skis are included along with a beautifully clear fuselage.

The engraved panel lines are very fine and can easily be seen through a layer of Tamiya tape. So, tape on...draw a new blade tip along the window outlines, and tape off. Job done. The small round masks were punched out using the sharpened end of a brass tube. Cool

Shouldn´t have too many problems blending in the clear parts on this build then! Makes sense really.

I like your choice of unusual markings!
And the kit looks pretty decent too.

Usually, one of the last things I do before painting is to mask the transparencies. So, having done that first this time, my immediate feeling was "I'm almost done...ready for paint!" Never mind that nothing was glued together at that point.

The kit control column pinged off into inner space and I was looking the other way so didn't even see in which direction it launched. So, after a brief search, it was back to the spares box for this one.

The front seats are kit, the other four from spares box. A little rough I know, but you'll barely be able to tell that they are there, let alone how detailed they are.

Image

Fuselage and wings glued together, fuselage seams covered with filler. No problems yet...this is looking like a very nice kit.

True to form, the Ministry of Missing Parts has returned the kit control column after the fuselage was securely sealed up. :ha:

Ah, well - it can go in the spares box.

I always find it a little odd - even disconcerting - to see a kit with clear fuselage halves. As if you are looking at one of those "Visible Man" kits.....

Hi Barry, I've got the rivet-tastic Airfix version in my stash, so I'll be watching this build with interest and look forward to seeing the finished model :)

I've never seen a clear fuselage before... wierd!

Did you see The Migrant's build of the Airfix one in Circuits & Bumps? Very impressive!

I built the Airfix one a few years ago. It's a pretty nice looking kit even if you don't take the rivets off (I didn't on that one). The Hobbycraft version doesn't have the four windows in the roof. I don't know if they were a military version thing or just an early model DHC-2 thing.

I have the same markings in my stash to go with the Airfix Beaver.

The team from Hawkeye come over for the South Australian Model Comps and bring their full range of decals. They have some great civilian schemes for aircraft like the Catalina, Otter & Sunderland.

They are working on the farewell scheme for the RAAF C130Hs that just retired. Make sure all of you check out their website for some great schemes

The Airfix Beaver is closer to the military version, while the Hobbycraft kit is more like the civil version.

Hi Barry and Hi everyone;
Clear fuselage part? Good idea. I wish Airfix had done to Blenheim MkIV this idea.

Maketci.

Right, that would have solved a lot of problems on that kit. I tossed it and built the MPM kit instead.
