Splash's Ho Ho Ho Green Giant ***finished***

Post by splash »

I have not heard any good things about Starfix kits, so as I picked this up cheap on eBay I thought I would give it a go.

My cunning plan is to cross kit it with the Airfix Seaking to make something that might look something like a Jolly Green Giant :???:

Ho Ho Ho Splash.

This looks "jolly" interesting.

I hope it works out.

Starfix kits have a habit of making their builders go Boo Hoo Hoo :-D

This should be interesting and welcome to the crew Splash. I've also never heard anything good said about Starfix kits, but I like the cross-kit idea with the Sea King. I'm sure in your capable hands it'll end up looking something like a JGG. Best of luck!

The kit looks basic but usable, on the plus side the body looks not bad but the tail ramp is moulded closed and apart from two seats and an instrument panel the interior is empty. On the negative side there is a small amount of flash and the rotor head and main / tail rotors are lacking in detail.

I intend to use the Airfix Seaking rotor head, blades and barn door engine intake guard and possibly the main undercarriage (I knew there was a reason it picked up a couple of Seakings cheap from Model Zone before they went under :-D ).

Ok well at least the box art suggests it can actually be built!

Good luck with crossing it with the Airfix kit.

That's what I thought only time will tell :-D

First good point: there are no raised or engraved panel lines and the plastic has a high gloss finish just like the very old Revell kits used to have. I have heard people say the big problem with Starfix kits is the inaccurate panel lines so that's one thing less to worry about.

Second good point: looking at the parts they have included the load spreader rig, this was fitted on the Commando Seaking Mk4's that I flew in, if we needed to lift heavy loads, the system works by speeding the weight of the load over 4 pulleys equally and to always centre the load over the a/c centre of gravity.

Third good point: I get to reduce my A:B ratio by two :-D

I think this is one of Starfix's "better" offerings. It's apparently a straight copy of the vintage Aurora kit, with some simplification (like the moulded in place tail ramp and no separate floor. But the Aurora kit is thought to be good in shape terms, and isn't plagued by "rivets" like the only other alternative, the Revell kit of the same vintage...

Compared to some Starfix kits, this is a "shake and bake"! I think you made a good choice...

Well, we have Whiff and Starfix builds in here - a GB that is all things to all men :-D

Sounds like you might have hit the Starfix jackpot here Splash and bought one of their more buildable kits.

Not much time on the bench until the weekend but I have started to remove the parts to see what might go where.

I was thinking about swapping the noses but looking at the Airfix nose it's as bad as the star fix nose so I don't think it would be worth the effort.

One thing that surprised me was the Airfix kit has more flash than the Starfix kit  it really is time for Airfix to drop the Seaking it's well past it's sell by date.

Indeed Splash it is time that Airfix produced a new tool of the Sea King. IMHO it is a famous and important type that is surely worthy of consideration for re-tooling - as indeed is the F-4!
