David's Aerial Attempt ** FINISHED **

Post by DavidWomby »

So here's most of the bits I expect to use/butcher.

It seems a shame to use the Cutty Sark kit this way but here's the sort of thing I am aiming for.

I am very out of my comfort zone here.

If you can walk away from a landing, it's a good landing. If you use the airplane the next day, it's an outstanding landing

Wow! I'll be looking forward to seeing this come together - how are you planning on doing the gas bags?

Nifty idea !!!!

There are several airship models out but I suspect they are out-of-scale with the hull - that is, far too big. I would think that to truly steam-punky, your airships should be 18th or 19th Century, or maybe WW1 tethered observation balloons ....

Cool idea.

Gas bags? Wait and see.

The hull halves fitted well but getting the deck to fit was a struggle. It fits snuggly at either end but not at both as it's a tad short IMHO. Or it could just be my inexperience with ships. The Cutty Sark hull and deck are nicely detailed but the long boxy thing in the pic is a new enlarged deckhouse from scraps of plastic card that will cover most of the deck.

Interesting stuff!!. I just watched Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, have you seen the Royal 'Navy' airborne platforms in that?, four great engines and props holding them aloft, worth a look based on what you are doing!.
Hoping to return to modelling sometime this year!!

Cool idea. Are you going to poach some gun turrets from another kit or scratch some?

Nope, I've never seen that movie but you have the right idea. What looks like gas bags in my sketch are the turning circles of overhead propellers. My inspiration is a movie too - the 1961 version of Jules Verne's "Master of the World' - but my model will be much simpler.

In that story the aircraft hull is made of papier mache IIRC to save weight. I think I'll just assume phenomenally more powerful engines based on Parsons' steam turbines for my build (I can do that, can't I?).
