1/72 Opel Blitz / ESCI/ERTL 8611 (Restauration)

Post by KellerModeller »

Hello all,

back in around 1995, my cousin and me had a self invented wargame that we played on the carpet. We did not know that something like "tabletop games" existed, we just combined the PC games "Panzer General" and "Command & Conquer" with our 1/72 models using rulers & dice. (We also had a "real life" Panzer General Clone with squares on the backside of a wallpaper and self painted cards.)
Over all those years, some of the models used back then survived by hiding in non modelling releated storage areas.
One of them was the Opel Blitz from the ESCI/ERTL set of Opel Blitz and german Afrika Korps and it was in a somehow poor state:

Image

First step was to try reproducing the front right mudguard. Trying to shape plastic card was not successful, so I opted for Milliput. To prevent it from breaking and to be able to sculpt it, I built a supporting structure from steel wires and superglue:

This was then followed by filling with Milliput and sanding (I think the result looks like "real" car bodywork :-D ):

Image

The front bumper was missing as well, plastic card and Milliput to the rescue:

The same accident that deformed the front mudguard also destroyed the axle, so I fabricated something rouughly looking like the other side and added steel wire from one wheel to the other through the engine to gain stability for the handling during the following steps:

The fabric cover on the back of the truck was missing some "windows", those were added using masking tape and as the front right wheel was MIA since years, 3D printed exaples were added. I also added final details by using Dan Taylors generic german vehicle fittings set:

Final results in the next post :arrowD:

So, here is the result. The front window was made from transparent plastic sheet, the small side windows were made with crystal clear, both after painting. I made a small base from foam, white glue and sand and added an Afrika Korps member from the Revell Afrika Korps figures set:

Thanks for looking, I hope you like it!

Very nice KM, and an elegant bit of work on that mudguard.

Quite the glow up in quality. Good work. I still use dice and a ruler… I’ll change it up eventually :-D

Super work! I've always liked the old ESCI Blitz, and you have done a fine job of rescuing this one from oblivion!

Here's my ESCI Opel. Built in the mid-70's.

Great looking restoration and very impressive repairs and scratch building - not least because of the scale - amazing work KM!

Thank you all for your kind feedback, it's motivating ☺️.
The Opel Blitz from the 70s is still looking very good! (I wasn't even born at that time... 🤭). I like the interpretation of Panzergrau, it's a nice dark shade of grey!

I don't remember what colour I used. Probably a Humbrol enamel as the only paints I could get, in our small east coast Canadian town back then was Humbrol and Testors.

That is a really great resto, KM and nicely enhanced by that excellent base and figure.
